11:28pm: day 100
2007/12/01: snow run.
1st day of december! 1st snow of the year in my neighborhood! day 100 of 365days!
i've been slowly getting back into running over the past few weeks as all my bits and pieces started healing up. i signed up for the
jingle bell 5k run next sunday as a short race to get me back on my feet. today it was snowy and around freezing, but no accumulation or ice yet, so i took the opportunity to try out some bad weather gear.
went out for a quick 4 miles, long enough to see how everything felt once i warmed up, short enough that if i got too cold or wet i could come back. so,
brief reviews:- nice merino top by
smartwool (women's NTS combo half-zip): it's awesome in cold, dry weather, and held up fine in the light snow. once it started coming down more heavily, i was wet and miserable. i hate going out in a rain jacket because i get so hot and sweaty when i run that it's like being wrapped in a plastic bag inside a sauna. but i guess when it's cold enough to snow i'm going to have to suck it up.
today might have been a good day for my
actual winter softshell running jacket with a short-sleeve top underneath. or maybe my windbreaker with a long-sleeve top? ugh, i dunno.
-
my old cat hat, handknit out of crappy red heart acrylic yarn: worked great!! running in a stupid cat hat and pompoms also made me happy!!
-
women's ultra tight by roadrunner sports: i just got these yesterday - had been previously suffering in shorts and cotton yoga pants. these were perfect for the weather, and so comfortable. LOVE them for coming in petite sizes - yay for not having four inches of extra fabric bunched up around my knees! ass-pocket for keys: convenient but a little embarrassing to dig around in.
- GLOVES: BRING SOME NEXT TIME, stupid. do not look at them at home and then put them back into the closet at the last minute. hands were fine as long as i wasn't running into the wind, but bitterly cold whenever i was.
general snowy run thoughts:- glasses + precipitation: sucks. nothing to be done about it.
- however, running in the snow rules BECAUSE: a) very few runners' nemeses will be out, e.g. dog-walkers, bicyclists, creepy guys in dimly-lit side streets, slow families with huge strollers that straddle the entire sidewalk, etc.; b) wanting to get back inside will motivate you to run faster; and c) regardless of how slow you're going or how much of a complainy weakling you are in everyday life, PEOPLE WILL LOOK AT YOU LIKE YOU ARE A BAD-ASS AND POSSIBLY CRAZY. yeah!
